Description: Aims:
The unit aims to provide students with an introductory grounding in international relations and global politics, both in terms of historical developments and theoretical approaches to the subject's study.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who have successfully completed this unit will have gained:
* knowledge of the major developments in the history of international relations;
* insight into the principal sources of international conflict in this period and of attempts to reduce or prevent it;
* understanding of different theoretical approaches to International relations and global politics;
* more in-depth knowledge of specific case studies and events within global politics.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit.

Content:
Lectures and seminars provide: (i) an introduction to the history of international relations from the nineteenth to the twenty first century; (ii) an introduction to the key theoretical approaches to the study of international relations and globalisation.
