Description: Aims:
The aims of this unit are to provide students with a critical understanding of the theory and politics of the 'developmental state' with a thorough empirical grounding in the experiences of Asian states historically and in the contemporary era.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit, students should:
* Have a critical understanding of theories of developmentalism;
* Have a critical understanding of the historical role of the state in development processes in different parts of the world; and,
* Have in-depth knowledge of the contemporary political economy of development in a range of Asian countries.

1. Application of critical analytical skills to political and economic history
2. Critical analysis of policy in a historical context
3. Enhanced essay research, preparation and writing.

4. East Asian experiences: Japan, Korea, and Taiwan
5. Southeast Asian experiences: Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand
6. The Asian Financial Crisis
7. Is China a developmental state?
8. Are there developmental states in Africa?
9. Developmentalism and global economic governance
10. The global economic crisis and future of the developmental state.
