[Page last updated: 05 August 2021]

Academic Year: 2021/2
Owning Department/School: Department of Chemistry
Credits: 3 [equivalent to 6 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 60
Level: Masters UG & PG (FHEQ level 7)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: EX 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Exam (EX 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take CH20151 OR take CH20152
In taking this module you cannot take CH30237
Aims: To provide an introduction to modern X-ray and neutron scattering techniques for materials characterisation.

Learning Outcomes: After studying the Unit, students should be able to:
* Describe radiation sources used in X-ray and neutron experiments
* Calculate parameters based on small angle scattering and reflectivity data
* Demonstrate awareness of imaging and spectroscopy techniques using X-rays and neutrons
* Explain the differences between lab-based crystallography and that done at synchrotron and neutron sources.
* Critically analyse scientific literature on selected X-ray and neutron techniques.

Skills: Written communication (T, F, A), Information handling & retrieval (T, F, A), independent working (F), critical thinking (F, A), problem solving (F, A).

Content: Students will gain an understanding of the advanced X-ray and neutron technques used to study a variety of chemical systems. Scattering techniques relevant to chemical studies such as small angle scattering, reflectivity, grazing incidence diffraction and crystallography will be studied, as well spectroscopic techniques such as EXAFS, QENS, INS.
