Requisites:
Aims: The aim of this unit introduce and facilitate a foundational understanding of key concepts and evidence-based research in coaching and Physical Education, and to facilitate the development of fundamental pedagogical skills and knowledge underpinning effective coaching and Physical Education teaching.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Identify and explain key issues and topics in sport coaching and Physical Education
2. Identify and evaluate theories and concepts relevant to sport coaching and Physical Education and explain their value in understanding and intervening in sport and educational contexts
3. Select and apply practical pedagogical skills relevant to tasks such as session organisation and delivery in sport coaching and Physical Education contexts
4. Select, describe, and make use of ideas from reputable academic (e.g., scholarly journals) and non-academic (e.g., governing bodies) sources that are relevant to sport coaching and Physical Education in written and practical research activities
5. Articulate key issues, theories, principles, and perspectives relevant to sport coaching and Physical Education to intended audiences, such as academics and practitioners, using appropriate technologies
6. Recognise and discuss problems and challenges related to sport and physical education, and identify solutions individually and as part of a team.
7. Formulate informed opinions on, and discuss, the positive and negative role played by sport in society and other key topics in sport coaching and Physical Education.

Skills: Effectively manage time, resources, responsibilities, and changing contexts to meet personal goals and course requirements.
Take initiative in identifying problems and formulating solutions.
Effectively utilise contemporary information and communication technologies (ICTs).

Content: Definitions and dimensions of coaching and Physical Education (PE); the nature of sport and related concepts (e.g., physical activity, health, exercise, physical culture); theory and key concepts in coaching and PE (e.g., constructivism, behaviourism, cognitivism); coaching and PE histories; social value of coaching and PE (e.g., health, 'sport for good'); policy; teaching and coaching strategy and practice (e.g., fundamentals of pedagogy, integrating theory and practice, Mosston and Ashworth teaching styles, Teaching Games for Understanding); contexts of coaching and PE; reflective practice and professional development.
