Requisites:
Aims: To introduce the underlying principles of the scientific method, including research design and analysis, and equip students with the skills to underpin their engagement with research resources in units across the course.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Use a computer and relevant software packages for word processing, data handling, statistical analysis and information retrieval from various databases
2. Distinguish between a variety of research approaches and designs and identify the appropriate methods of statistical analysis
3. Explain issues of validity and reliability with regard to various research designs
4. Explain, select and use appropriate mathematical and statistical tools to process data and address sport, health and exercise research questions
5. Draw and present in a format appropriate to the discipline, accurate conclusions based on the research approach used and the outcome of data analysis.

Content:
* The unit will provide a grounding in statistical and mathematical analysis as relevant to sport, health and exercise settings.
* Study skills will be taught to enable students to meet the requirements in both this and all other units including: word processing; use of spreadsheets and foundations of programming; use of statistical and data analysis software packages; information retrieval; research design; basic statistical techniques; elementary introduction to calculus and a review of foundations in algebra and geometry; literature searching; referencing.
