Requisites: Before taking this module you must take HL10524 AND take HL10526
Aims: To introduce students to theories of population health, to the epidemiological and statistical concepts and methods used in defining population health burdens, to the concepts and methods of creating population health policy and practice.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Outline key concepts and theories of population health and apply these to discuss the history and development of approaches to public health
  2. Assess population health burden using key epidemiological measures.
  3. Analyse relevant population level data to estimate population and individual level health risk.
  4. Synthesize and appraise evidence to inform policy development for population health, evaluating the level of evidence used
  5. Apply methods for creating population health policy and practice to formulate a public health problem policy solution 
  6. Evaluate population health policies or interventions using methodology appropriate for the discipline.


Content: This unit will introduce students to approaches to public health that focus on improving the health of populations, rather than focusing on high-risk individuals. In the unit, students will cover each step of the policy and implementation cycle, from defining health problems within populations, through identifying solutions and informing policy, to implementation and evaluation of policy and population level interventions. The unit will take a global focus, considering the health burdens in a variety of countries and regions.
