| Description: | Aims:
To provide students with the necessary mathematical background to be able to model simple processes in the life sciences.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, students should be able to:
* manipulate, sketch and make effective use of a range of standard mathematical functions;
* analyse first order dynamical systems using a range of techniques;
* write down and analyse a range of simple mathematical models and interpret the results biologically.

Content:
Revision of A level material: exponentials, logarithms and trigonometric functions; techniques of differentiation & integration.
Curve sketching: exponential functions; trigonometric functions; saturating functions.
Mathematical modelling: formulation, Occam's razor; analysis; validation; modification.
First-order difference equations: solutions, cobweb diagrams, steady states, stability; biological applications
First-order ordinary differential equations; solution by separation of variables, integrating factor; steady states, stability; biological applications.
