[Page last updated: 04 August 2021]

Academic Year: 2021/2
Owning Department/School: Department of Mechanical Engineering
Credits: 6 [equivalent to 12 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 120
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 1
Assessment Summary: EX 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Examination (EX 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites:
Aims: To extend the student's ability to analyse conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer in the context of engineering systems.

Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
* Describe the concepts and understand the equations governing conduction, convection, radiation and combined modes of heat transfer.
* Solve heat transfer problems of engineering importance.

Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; working independently; written communication.

Content:
* Derive the multi-dimensional differential conduction equation and use the equation for analysis of conduction problems in plane walls and radial systems.
* Describe the fluid dynamics associated with convection and apply suitable methods of analysis to forced, natural, boiling and condensation convection processes.
* Develop and use equations for the analysis of coupled conduction-convection in fins, lumped systems and heat exchangers.
* Explain the fundamental principles of thermal radiation and use spectral analysis for assessment of radiative surface properties.
* Construct radiation flux balances at surfaces and analyse radiation heat exchange between surfaces.
* Explain the limitations of the methods used throughout the unit.
