Requisites:
Aims: To provide an understanding of: the use of computer aided techniques in the overall design process; the use of modelling within engineering design synthesis and analysis; the different types of CAD tools and their applications; reverse engineering; tools for capturing and managing engineering knowledge. To give experience in the use of CAD and related techniques.

Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
* Describe how computer-aided techniques can help in the design, modelling aspects of typical design tasks.
* Understand how those techniques can be applied to aspects of design from concept through to manufacture
* Critically evaluate the practical advantages (and disadvantages) of those techniques in different application areas.

Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; IT; working independently; written communication; presentation skills.

Content: Computer aids for design, analysis and manufacture, their relation to design needs. Use and operation of a commercial CAD system and application to design tasks. Use of computer-aided techniques from concept through to manufacture including reverse engineering. Use and operation of product life-cycle management (PLM) and application to design tasks.
