Requisites:
Aims: The unit aims to provide students with a broad understanding of managing suppliers and the sourcing process.
It will show students some of the core skills and techniques required in managing supply chains using an interactive and case-based approach.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit, students should be able to:
* Understand the role and importance of supply chain management (SCM) within the organisation
* Apply core SCM techniques to industry problems from the perspective of the supply chain manager or management consultant
* Understand and analyse the overall sourcing process
* Appreciate the challenges of managing risk in complex networks.

Skills: Intellectual skills
* Ability to evaluate and compare different theories and practices used in supply management (T, A)
* Ability to conceptualise supply frameworks and methodologies that enable the student to link theory and practice meaningfully and the ability to appraise critically both theory and practice (T and A)
* Understand the trade-offs inherent in managing resource constrained supply networks (T, F, A)
Practical skills
* Ability to analyse the challenges facing an organisation's supply chain (T, F)
* Application of models, tools and techniques that are relevant to both supply chain managements and management consultants (F, A)

* Ability to manage and work in teams with an awareness of issues such as culture and gender, to identify learning/working styles and to use these to the benefit of the individual and the team (F)
* Facility to communicate, preparation and production of effective business reports (T, F, A)

Content: This unit focuses on understanding key inter-organisational issues relevant for supply chain management such as the make or buy decision, strategic sourcing and topics related to working with suppliers. The unit provides a balance of academic content such as useful theories and literature, alongside practical applications in the form of case studies, simulations or examples. The unit also introduces contemporary issues in the management of supply chains.
