Requisites:
Description: Aims:
The aims of this unit are to provide a knowledge base of recent developments in understanding general receptor pharmacology and mechanisms associated with modulation of receptor function, and to examine modern technologies used to study and to image these systems in a variety of cells and tissues.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to: synthesise an in-depth knowledge of recent studies of receptor function and expression, evaluate critically the technologies available to analyse the behaviour of functional receptor structures and utilise a range of ICT and cognitive skills in acquiring knowledge and understanding and applying them to complex, incomplete or contradictory situations.

Skills:
Scientific skills (T/F/A)
Study skills, handling information, working with others (T/F)
Problem solving (T/F).

Content:
Following an introduction and brief overview of earlier core units, a number of topics will be discussed within the general theme of receptor expression and function. Topics will be selected on the basis of their currency at a given time - examples may include mechanisms of receptor desensitisation, receptor up- and down-regulation, structural biology of receptor families, advanced ligand-receptor theory, and application of experimental techniques in pharmacological research.

Programme availability:

PA40251 is Compulsory on the following programmes:

Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology
  • USPA-AKM02 : MPharmacol(Hons) Pharmacology with Year long work placement (Year 4)
