Aims: This course will provide an overview on Spanish Gender History from 1875 to the present day. The course will cover the legal status of Spanish men and women throughout different political regimes from the Restauración (1875-1931) to democracy, including the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War and Franco's Regime. It will also focus on the diverse forms of gender identity which were developed on the basis of these legal norms. In addition, it will examine central issues such as the discourses of the exclusion of women from politics since the Restauración; dichotomies of public/private and social/political; struggles for the inclusion of women in politics; implications of equality during the Second Republic; impact of the Civil War on gender relations; effects of the gender backlash on daily life during Franco's Regime; implications of the transition to democracy for gender identities; and equality challenges for the future. We will also discuss a series of texts and other historical sources that provides information on these topics. The final aim is to tackle the question of how gender relations, far from being static, have been constantly renegotiated within the different regimes of Spanish History.
