Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit you will be able to:
* Apply your knowledge in order to evaluate and critique current problems, methodologies and/or new insights in your field
* Design and carry out an extended research project
* Demonstrate originality in applying your practical understanding of established research and enquiry techniques to create and interpret a biological dataset and address your research question
* Exercise time and resource management, analytical, interpretative and literature-accessing skills during the undertaking and presentation of your project
* Construct scientific writing at the level of a primary research paper
* Use professional judgement to employ initiative and autonomy or draw on and develop teamwork skills as appropriate to the situation.

Aims: A research project carried out over 17-20 weeks which provides you the opportunity to plan, execute and report a scientific investigation in the format of a research paper.

Content: You will learn how to
* Build on the skills gained in Research Project 1a and apply these to address a question or problem.
* Conduct an extensive review of related research work, and choose appropriate methods and approaches, leading to the implementation of the chosen solution, its testing and evaluation.
* Write a report in the style of a research paper, synthesising an analytical approach to solving or investigating a substantial biological question or problem.
