Further information on unit assessment Assessment Detail:
  • Assessment detail for this unit will be available shortly.
Supplementary Assessment:
Other reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of technical, economic and sustainable aspects of open-ended design problems.
  • Solve problems involving uncertainty, sensitivity, complexity and inter-disciplinary issues to engineer sustainable resources.
  • Develop communication strategy to address stakeholders involved in process design and operation.
  • Implement process models and apply relevant software to solve engineering problems.
  • Effectively lead and manage tasks when working in a multidisciplinary group.

Synopsis: Working on multi-disciplinary problems, you will develop knowledge of process design, economic analysis as well as modelling software and simulation tools, which assist process design practices. Working in small groups and using critical thinking and interpersonal skills, such as, leadership and time management you will holistically design different unit operations for a sustainable chemical engineering process, mapping the outcomes to the UN sustainable development goals.

Content:
  • Fundamentals of process design, e.g. system boundary, mass and energy balances, unit operations.
  • Statistical methods for process analysis, design and optimization under uncertainties.
  • Process modelling and optimization (management, analysis & compliance) software.
  • Economic analysis fundamentals, e.g. capital and operation costs, discounted cash flow concept, profitability concept.
  • Project management for environmental engineering.
  • Opportunities in and challenges to sustainable development goals.
  • Entrepreneurial minded learning.
