[Page last updated: 21 April 2022]

Academic Year: 2022/3
Owning Department/School: Department of Chemistry
Credits: 12 [equivalent to 24 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 240
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Academic Year
Assessment Summary: CW 30%, EX 70%
Assessment Detail:
  • Coursework (CW 30%)
  • Examination Paper A (EX 45%)
  • Examination Paper B (MCQ) (EX 25%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take CH20147 AND take CH20149 AND take CH20151
While taking this module you must take CH30055 OR take CH30060 . This unit is only available to students on MChem and MSci programmes.
Learning Outcomes: After studying the Unit, students should be able to:
* Demonstrate knowledge of key aspects of all areas of fundamental chemistry expected of a graduate chemist;
* Demonstrate an ability to solve problems across the discipline boundaries within chemistry;
* Demonstrate the ability to learn outside the formal confines of lecture-based teaching;
* Describe in-depth knowledge of the chosen areas;
* Solve problems within the chosen area of study.

Aims: To revise key aspects of level C and I material which is fundamental to M-level study in chemistry. To allow students to develop core knowledge in Chemistry which will be built on in the final year of the course and to encourage approaches to independent learning.

Skills: Independent working (F), Data Analysis (F, A), Problem solving (F, A), Scientific writing (F, A).

Content: Key aspects of all three branches of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical) from years 1 and 2 of the course will be revised through independent study, to prepare students for an overarching, synoptic exam of the core chemistry programme up to H-level. In addition, the student will study three topics from across a range of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Appropriate independent learning materials will be supplied and students will undertake the study in their own time during the placement year. Formative feedback is provided in the independent learning materials in the form of Self-Assessment Questions.
