Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit the student will be able to:
* Identify some issues about an aspect of the language system or about a language skill and describe a relevant course of action which addresses such issues.
* Analyse the needs of a group of pre-service or in-service teachers and design and discuss a course plan which addresses those needs.
* Identify and critically evaluate issues concerning the teaching of young language learners in specific pedagogical contexts.
* Design a range of assessment procedures for a particular pedagogical context and discuss their rationale.
* Critique the relevance and effectiveness of specific new technologies in relation to a particular pedagogical context and suggest relevant adaptations.

Aims: The aims of this unit are:
* To introduce current approaches and concepts in relation to the teaching and assessment of English as an international language.
* To foster a critical understanding of language teaching and testing as they apply to a variety of language learning situations.
* To encourage students to establish links between classroom practices and relevant research.
* To introduce approaches and issues related to the design of teacher training or teacher development courses.
* To enhance the professional practice of students through a more critical understanding and sensitivity towards their language teaching approaches and techniques.
