Notional Study Hours: 120
Level: Certificate (FHEQ level 4)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: CW 20%, EX 80%
Assessment Detail:
  • Technical report (CW 20%)
  • Examination (EX 80%)
Supplementary Assessment:
EE10169 Reassessment examination (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student should be able to:
* manipulate Boolean expressions, including minimisation by algebraic and graphical techniques;
* design basic combinational and sequential digital circuits from functional specifications.

Aims: To introduce students to the design and operation of digital logic systems including combinational and sequential logic circuits. To illustrate the applications of these circuits in digital subsystems and systems and to appreciate the advantages of the alternative methods of implementation.

Skills: Numeracy; problem solving; working independently

Content: Combinational logic: the binary system, Boolean algebra and gates, logic maps, minimisation. Applications: adders, subtractors, comparators, parity circuits, multiplexers, encoder/decoder circuits. Programable logic implementations: ROM, PLA & PAL structures and implementation of logic circuits. Sequential logic: synchronous & asynchronous circuits, latches & flip-flops, registers & counters. State machines & design methods, internal state reduction, state assignment methods.
