MA50284: Industrial applications of mathematics

[Page last updated: 03 August 2022]

Academic Year: 2022/23
Owning Department/School: Department of Mathematical Sciences
Credits: 6 [equivalent to 12 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 120
Level: Masters UG & PG (FHEQ level 7)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: CW 50%, EX 50%
Assessment Detail:
  • Coursework (CW 50%)
  • Examination (EX 50%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit students will be able to:
* Connect modern applications of mathematics to the challenges presented by an interdisciplinary environment;
* Recognise modern mathematical methods and modelling techniques, with an emphasis on problem-solving;
* Formulate problems from a mathematical modelling perspective;
* Classify mathematical findings for effective use in a specified industrial context.

Aims: In the course of the unit students will be trained in the mathematical techniques for solving real-world problems relevant to a variety of industrial applications. The unit is the second part of a bespoke package that covers the applied mathematics aspect of the training, focussing on concrete contexts of industrial application of mathematics. The first unit (Mathematical Modelling for Industry), delivered in Semester 1, provides the relevant theoretical foundations.

Skills: Translating an industrial ptoblem to the mathematical language, utilising modern mathematical techniques for industrial problem solving.

Content: Four mini-courses (approx. 4 hours each) on areas of industrial application of the theory covered in Mathematical Modelling for Industry, such as:
* Image processing;
* Compressed sensing;
* Network analysis;
* Computer animation.
The selected areas provide a focus for the application of theoretical knowledge and skills, through supervised group work.
