MA50286: Project

[Page last updated: 03 August 2022]

Academic Year: 2022/23
Owning Department/School: Department of Mathematical Sciences
Credits: 30 [equivalent to 60 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 600
Level: Masters UG & PG (FHEQ level 7)
Period:
Dissertation period
Assessment Summary: DS 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Dissertation (DS 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Note: An interview with the student may be conducted in May, to assess and discuss viability of project modes: with a company, with an academic supervisor on campus.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit students will be able to:
* Apply knowledge in the chosen field of industrial application.
* Design a work programme and develop the project with minimal supervision and guidance, justified in the context of the current literature.
* Conceptualise a real-world problem in mathematical terms and create solutions independently.
* Defend the project's work programme and critically evaluate and interpret the project results and data in the context of the current state-of-the-art.
* Initiate mathematical, statistical, and data science research and relate it to the industrial context.
* Generate ideas on an advanced topic in mathematics, statistics, or data science, expounding these into a coherent, well-argued dissertation.
* Compose a dissertation that presents a critical discussion of a topic related to the application of mathematics to industry, following specified formatting protocols and using literature to support the discussion.

Aims: In this unit students will work on the project they have scoped during Semester 2. They will work under the joint supervision of a university academic and an industrial partner, who will support them in fostering their independent thinking in the industrial context and related skills that they have been introduced to in the preceding units of the course. This will complete students' training in applying mathematics to industrial problems.

Skills: Problem solving, writing up the results of research, presenting results of research to a variety (academic, non-academic) audiences.

Content: A research topic will be selected in conjunction with a member of staff and together a programme of modelling work will be planned. In addition appropriate literature searches will be conducted to review the background to the project. Report writing, including critical analysis of the data, and presentation skills will be covered in this unit.
