* apply this knowledge to real-world political developments.

Aims: The aim of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of women's role in politics as well as to examine some areas of political theory in relation to gender and sexuality. The unit will explore issues surrounding gender, political representation, participation and policy: for instance, what can/should be done about male over-representation in legislatures worldwide? It will also cover key issues concerning gender and political theory: feminist understandings of 'the political' as well as a variety of theoretical approaches to the relationship between gender, sexuality and 'the state'. Students will be able to apply this knowledge in case studies comparing developments in various countries.

* Gender, representation and participation
