On completion of the unit, candidates should have developed their capability as aspiring management practitioners who are engaging in international business activities, grounded in an understanding of the interrelationships between national and supranational cultural, social, institutional and political contexts and organizations. |
Aims: | To develop an understanding of the art of managing within an international business context, in particular by considering how different national and supranational cultural, social, institutional and political contexts interact with organizations and their management. |
Skills: | Intellectual ability to synthesise and apply theories and empirical evidence across the fields of cultural, social, institutional and political contexts as they relate to international business will be required and enhanced.
Practical ability to analyse, identify and relate cultural, social, institutional and political contexts to micro- and macro-levels of organizations will be necessary and developed. |
Content: | Topics covered will include why, how and to what degree culture, social, and political practices, institutions and structures affect different aspects of organizing in an international business context and the extent to which organizational actors can manage these dynamics. The unit will address the following topics:
* Myths, realities, trends and evolution in national and non-national cultures * An understanding of (international) management and organizational practice as shaped through cultural, social, institutional and political contexts * Case studies and practical approaches by which business organizations and other actors seek to manage cultural, social, institutional and political contexts * The challenges of working and managing within the pluralistic, contradictory and dynamic context of international business. |
