Learning Outcomes: |
By the end of this unit students will be able to
* Describe the different stages of the drug discovery process
* Evaluate the importance of each stage and appreciate the challenges which arise in the development of novel therapeutic agents
* Draw on a range of examples of agents at different stages of development
* Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of current developments in drug discovery programmes within the pharmaceutical industry.
|
Aims: | To enable the student to develop an appreciation of the drug discovery process. This unit will build on introductory first year lectures to explore the process in more detail with consideration of the pharmacological approaches and challenges faced at each stage. External speakers from industry will aid the students in putting this knowledge into context to prepare them for placement opportunities.
|
Skills: | Scientific skills (T/F/A)
Study skills, handling information, working with others (T/F)
Problem solving (T/F).
|
Content: | Students will attend lectures focusing on each stage of the drug discovery process considering the techniques and approaches involved, models used and challenges and limitations of the process. Guest speakers will set the process in context with examples of the historical development of approved agents. Students will carry out group research into the development of a given drug and produce an essay about one aspect of the drug discovery process.
