Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the current status of stem cell research and the potential application of stem cells in key therapeutic areas and utilise a range of ICT and cognitive skills in acquiring knowledge and understanding and applying them to given situations.

Aims: The aims of this unit are to provide a knowledge base of fundamental aspects of adult and embryonic stem cell biology and how stem cells and their progeny can be used in basic research, development of cellular therapies and drug discovery.

Skills: Scientific skills (T/F/A)
Study skills, handling information, working with others (T/F)
Problem solving (T/F).

Content: Fundamental aspects of stem cell biology will be covered first, including normal function, maintenance of self-renewal and control of differentiation. The biology of embryonic and adult stem cells will be discussed along with the role of stem cells in cancer. The prospects and challenges for the use of stem cells as new therapeutic options to treat a range of chronic degenerative and inflammatory diseases as well as drug targets will be discussed.
