Assessment Detail: |
|
Supplementary Assessment: |
|
Requisites: | |
Learning Outcomes: |
Accurately and methodically perform a range of chemical processes from across all branches of chemistry, evaluating the limitations of each including sources of error;
Recognise and review the safety implications of your work;
Report laboratory observations and measurements clearly and logically, explaining results and conclusions in terms of theoretical frameworks;
Use a computational chemistry package to investigate and analyse a molecular structure and its associated properties. |
Synopsis: | You will develop the necessary skills required for synthetic procedures, measuring physical properties and performing computational analysis. You will relate the experimental work to scientific theory. You will work in a safe manner and be able to articulate the experimental results in a scientific format, whether that be written or orally. |
Content: | The unit will introduce the necessary experimental techniques required for chemical manipulations. For example, assembly of apparatus for preparative and analytical chemistry, preparation of standard solutions and performance of straightforward purification techniques such as recrystallisation;
You will make accurate analytical measurements using selected methods;
You will perform preparative procedures in chemical synthesis in a safe and efficient manner.
Relate the chemistry from lecture units to the appropriate laboratory experiment;
Use a computational chemistry package to optimise molecular geometries and predict properties. |
