[Page last updated: 09 August 2024]

Academic Year: 2024/25
Owning Department/School: Department of Chemistry
Credits: 10 [equivalent to 20 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 200
Level: Intermediate (FHEQ level 5)
Period:
Academic Year
Assessment Summary: CWRI 100%, PRPR 0%
Assessment Detail:
  • Practical Assessment 1 (PRPR 0% - Qualifying Mark: 40)
  • Practical Assessment 2 (PRPR 0% - Qualifying Mark: 40)
  • Report Individual (CWRI 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take CH12003
Learning Outcomes: Design and implement strategies to solve synthetic and non-synthetic problems in a concise and safe manner; Demonstrate the ability to perform a range of synthetic procedures; Report clear and concise accounts of the experimental work performed and rationalise the conclusions; Evaluate the results in terms of the theory underlying the experiment; Use computer packages to perform calculations and interpret the chemical significance of the results obtained.

Synopsis: To consolidate and extend the laboratory skills developed in year 1. In this unit there will be an element of experimental design and independent investigation. The experiments complement some of the lecture materials and allow you to be able to interpret experimental data theoretically. This unit will include an element of transferable skills (e.g. writing, coding and presentation) which will be embedded within the unit.

Content: The experiments have been designed to illustrate the wide diversity in chemistry and to highlight the multidisciplinary nature of synthetic and computational work. The experiments will extend core competencies from Year 1, and introduce you to new, skills and techniques. You will be exposed to appropriate computational software for modelling and manipulation. You will also be expected to, under supervision, complete the COSHH assessments of your work.
