[Page last updated: 09 August 2024]

Academic Year: 2024/25
Owning Department/School: Department of Life Sciences
Credits: 5 [equivalent to 10 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 100
Level: Intermediate (FHEQ level 5)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: CWOI 50%, CWRI 50%
Assessment Detail:
  • Oral presentation Individual (CWOI 50%)
  • Report (CWRI 50%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: In taking this module you cannot take SL22040
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
  • Describe and explain how appropriate data sets can be acquired from observation and from the literature.
  • Evaluate data sets through application of appropriate analytical methods.
  • Communicate your data analysis findings.

Synopsis: Through lectures and workshops you will learn how to design the collection of data sets and how to analyse and interpret the data, in order to address questions of biological significance. You will implement these skills in a small group data analysis project.

Content: This unit will educate students in transferable skills relevant to biological studies. 1. Planning the collection of different types of biological data (e.g. epidemiology, genomics, field studies etc) and the methods for analysis of these data will be explained in lectures and practised in workshops. 2. Starting half-way through the semester, students will undertake a small group data analysis project. Each group will conduct a meta analysis on a chosen topic, supported by tutorials. Students will give a formal presentation of their findings (e.g written report and / or seminar).
