Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
* Explain the historical emergence and changing conceptions of 'race' and racism.
* Analyse how 'race' is implicated in contemporary political debates and social problems.
* Evaluate competing accounts of how to challenge racism and racial inequality.


Synopsis: "Explore sociological accounts of race, ethnicity, racism and anti-racism. You will develop an understanding of the changing landscape of historical and contemporary ideas about `race and patterns of racism across national and global contexts. You will also learn about the challenges and opportunities for effective anti-racist practice and advocacy."

Content: This unit offers an introduction to sociological accounts of 'race', ethnicity, racism and anti-racism. The unit examines the changing landscape of historical and contemporary ideas about 'race' and patterns of racism across national and global contexts. The unit will then consider the role of 'race' in policy debates and different institutional contexts, as well as opportunities for effective strategies for anti-racist practice and advocacy.
