Choosing Modules Online (new Undergraduate and full-time Taught Postgraduate students): Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some questions we are frequently asked in relation to choosing modules online via SAMIS on the Web. If you cannot find the answer to your question here, please use the Contact Support button in SAMIS on the Web to request assistance.

Please note that this information is provided for new undergraduate and taught postgraduate students choosing modules at the beginning of the academic year. Information for continuing undergraduate students choosing modules for the following academic year in April/May can be found at: http://www.bath.ac.uk/catalogues/information/students/online-module-selection.html.

How many modules should I choose?

Undergraduate students should ordinarily take modules worth 60 credits during each academic year. Taught postgraduate students on most full-time Masters programmes should take 90 credits. You should therefore check that the modules you have chosen, together with any compulsory modules/DEUs (which you can see by following the 'Current modules' link from your SAMIS student home page), total the correct number of credits. You can find further information on the number of optional modules you are required to take during each programme year via the Programme and Unit Catalogues and your Director of Studies will also be able to advise you regarding appropriate option choices.

Do I have to choose a module from every list available to me?

You must choose at least one module from each list which states a minimum number of modules or credits and you must ensure that the combination of the optional modules which you have chosen and the compulsory modules which you can see via the 'Current modules' screen make up the correct number of credits for your programme year. You do not have to make a selection from any lists with a minimum of 0 unless you want to take one of the modules included in that list.

I keep getting an error message when I try to submit my module selections. What does it mean?

There are various error messages which may appear in the online module selection screens. They usually indicate that you have not complied with a rule attached to your programme. Follow this link (pdf) to see various error messages which may commonly appear.

How do I choose a Generally Available module?

Undergraduate students are allowed to choose up to 6 credits of extra modules outside of their programme of study each year.  This will not count towards your degree programme but will be included in your transcript.  You can find a list of these ‘Generally Available Units’ in the Programme and Unit Catalogues

You cannot select Extra modules via the on-line module selection screens.  If you wish to take a ‘Generally Available Unit’ other than modules belonging to the Skills Centre, please speak to your department.

Please see below for information on how to enrol on modules offered by the Skills Centre.

How do I enrol on a module offered by the Skills Centre?

You cannot register for modules belonging to the Skills Centre (modules with codes beginning EL or FL) via SAMIS.  Please visit the Skills Centre web pages (https://www.bath.ac.uk/professional-services/skills-centre/) for information on how to enrol on their modules.

How will I know when my option choices have been confirmed?

Your option choices will be confirmed once you have confirmed your selections in SAMIS and you can see the page entitled "Module Choice Complete" . You will then be able to view your chosen modules via the 'Current Modules' link on the SAMIS student homepage. NB. Your Director of Studies will be able to view the modules you have chosen.  In some circumstances you may be required to change your options if your Director of Studies feels that your choices are not appropriate.  If this is the case you will be contacted to discuss your options further.

↑top

What do I do if I have changed my mind about my option choices?

If you change your mind after you have confirmed your selections, use the ‘Undo any selection’ button and you will be able to change the modules that you have chosen.  You can change your selections at any time before while the module selection screens are available however, pleast note that making changes after you have submitted your selections may mean that you lose your place on any modules which have limited availability.

If you want to change your module choices but are concerned about losing your place on another module you have chosen, please contact support for assistance. Where possible we will help you to change your optional modules.

What should I do if I miss the deadline for submitting my option choices on-line?

Please contact your programme administrator or your Director of Studies/Director of Teaching as soon as possible.  Please make every effort to choose your modules whilst online module selection is available.
