Terms of reference

Approved by Senate, 6 February 2019.

The committee will judge the nominations for the prize on two elements, the written submission from the research staff member and their Director of Research and an oral presentation by the research staff member. The committee will explore reasons why the staff member’s contribution to their particular research is outstanding and its wider significance.

Appointment of Chair

A Pro-Vice-Chancellor.


  • a professor nominated by the Vice-Chancellor
  • the Chair of the University Research Students' Committee (or a member of the committee appointed by the Chair), provided that no two members come from the same department


The committee shall have the power to co-opt additional members or to invite Assessors to be present at any meeting.

The committee will normally meet in the Spring to consider nominations for the prize and will confirm a shortlist of students. Finalist will be required to make an oral presentation to a University audience, including the Committee.
