Floods, landslides, earthquakes and wind storms cause massive amounts of money in damage each year. Civil engineers design preventative measures such as flood defences, as well as develop more resilient infrastructure to mitigate the impact of extreme events.
Our research aims to understand and predict the scale and frequency of future extreme events. We do this by developing better tools for engineers to use. We also investigate how natural hazards interact with both the natural and built environments.
Areas of expertise
- frequency analysis of extreme events
- modelling and monitoring of coastal and marine processes
- hydrological design flood modelling
- numerical modelling of urban and coastal flooding, including tsunami
