The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 (known as the Prevent Duty) was introduced by Government in September 2015. It places an obligation on universities to have due regard to the need to prevent people being drawn into terrorism. In response to this the University developed a Prevent Policy to ensure that it is compliant with the requirement of the Prevent Duty.
The Policy was approved by Council on 26th November 2015 and subsequently by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). In April 2018, responsibility for monitoring the Prevent Duty in Higher Education transferred to the Office for Students (OfS).
In addition, the University’s Freedom of Expression Code of Practice (Regulation 18) fulfils the requirement in the Prevent Duty for universities to have policies and procedures in place for the management of events on Campus and use of the University’s premises.
