Supplementary assessment like-for-like reassessment

The aim of the unit is to introduce the student to the design and manufacturing process of a robotic system. The unit will provide a broad understanding of mechanism and component design integrated with actuation and sensing. Design of robotics system from concept to implementation working as a team and individually.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this unit the student should be able to:

  • produce and interpret designs for robotic systems
  • produce engineering sketches for both electrical and mechanical systems
  • select the appropriate manufacturing processes such as machining, forming and joining, and the heat treatment of metals
  • select from a range of traditional manufacturing processes for electrical and mechanical designs in robotics

  • Problem solving
  • Robotic design
  • Design presentation
  • Prototyping
  • Using a workbook approach for independent learning
  • Present information in a written form
  • Planning, controlling and executing a project
  • Team work

The unit will include introducing mechanism design, manufacturing processes and electronic systems such as, micro-controller development boards, motors, actuators, servos, sensor prototyping modules. The integration of electromechanical systems will be illustrated using robotic/electronic consumer examples.
