Many congratulations on securing your place to study at the University of Bath; I wish you continued success during your time with us.
As Director of Studies (DoS), responsible for the academic and operational management of the MRes Economics programme, I’d like to take this opportunity to personally welcome you to the University and to the Department of Economics. Below you will find some information about the induction programme that has been arranged for you.
Welcome week runs Monday 24 to Sunday 30 September 2018. On Monday, 24 September at 11:15 BST you will have an introductory meeting for all new students in the Department. This will give you the opportunity to meet myself, and your new fellow Economics students. On Thursday, 27 September at 15:00 BST there will also be a meeting for all new MRes students in the Faculty. You will meet our Director of MRes, Dr Kerry Papps, and your fellow MRes students of Economics and other disciplines.
Support available in your Department
Although exciting, many students find that the transition to study at a new institution can be challenging. We are here to support you so please let us know if you are having any difficulties or have any concerns and we will do our very best to assist you through this transitional period. You can contact:
Myself, Dr Kei Tsutsui, Director of Studies, K.Tsutsui@bath.ac.uk
Catherine Adams, Postgraduate Programme Administrator C.J.Adams@bath.ac.uk
Sharon Firkins, MRes Co-ordinator S.M.Firkins@bath.ac.uk
All incoming students will also be allocated a Personal Tutor who will be responsible for providing pastoral and academic support. You will also have a Peer Mentor who is a current student in the Department and will be able to share experiences with you, and answer any questions you may have about being a student here at Bath. We will also work with you to allocate a supervisor for your Research apprenticeship projects and Dissertation within the first couple of weeks.
Department pre-arrival information
We’ve put together some suggested texts to help you to read around the area of Economics before you commence your studies with us.

Hoy, M, Livernois, J., McKenna, C., Rees, R., and Stengos, T. “Mathematics for Economics”, MIT Press, 2001.
Green, W H, “Econometric Analysis”, Pearson, 2017 (A summary of most of the material can be found in Appendices B, C and D).
Dougherty, C. “Introduction to Econometrics”, Oxford, 2008.
Please note that these texts are only a recommendation and you are not required to purchase or read the full list.
Choosing your optional units
You will be asked to select your optional unit choices during Welcome Week via our Student Record system. You will find out more information about how to do this during your Departmental induction talks. However, you may like to look at the Programme Catalogues online before you arrive, so you can see the options available on your programme. The catalogue for the forthcoming academic year is available from the second week of August.
You can find more information about Welcome Week and things you can do in preparation for your arrival at Bath. These pages will be updated as the time draws closer to Welcome Week (particularly during September). Therefore, please do continue to visit these pages ahead of your arrival.
I very much look forward to meeting you at the end of September. In the meantime, if you have any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
With very best wishes,
Dr Kei Tsutsui
Director of Studies
