Modern Building Design MSc

3 semesters, starting in September 2020

Develop the knowledge of building design practice, methodologies and processes sought after by engineering and architectural design firms and contractors.

Our master's introduces you to the challenges of managing building design processes and practices in industry. Using multidisciplinary approaches, you’ll learn how to balance conflicting design tensions in projects and integrate regulatory requirements with low-carbon certification and basic building physics. During the course, you'll explore a range of areas including building physics, regulations and codes, sustainability and well-being standards. You’ll also study the relationship between Building Information Modelling (BIM) and collaborative integrated design management.

Using dynamic digital modelling tools, you'll apply your knowledge to optimise low-carbon building envelope solutions. You'll put theory into practice working on live project briefs with students from different construction-related disciplines. This challenges you to solve design problems in real time while gaining an insight into multidisciplinary collaboration.

Combining your research dissertation with a three-month placement allows you to embed what you’ve learnt in a professional context. It also gives you the chance to deliver solutions to real industry problems posed by your company.

Learn from experts in the field

You’ll learn from academics who research sustainable and low-carbon development, building physics and the environment. Their expertise and international collaborations feed into teaching and contribute to your learning experience. Our research was ranked 1st in the UK in the Architecture and the Built Environment submission in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

Use specialist facilities

You'll receive training in key BIM-enabled software and will have access to extensive online software training resources.

Start your future here

We developed our course with professional industry partners in architecture and civil engineering. This ensures that your studies reflect everyday practice in the construction sector. When you graduate, your knowledge of low-carbon and energy efficient design will help you start a career in engineering and design consultancies worldwide.

Some of our best performing students continue their studies with us through our PhD programme.

Course structure

This course lasts 3 semesters. It starts in September 2020 and ends in 2022. Induction week starts on 21 September 2020.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Placement

You'll spend a minimum of three months in a professional practice between June and December, running in parallel with your research dissertation. A placement is an opportunity for you to apply what you’ve learnt by working on industry-driven research topics. We have extensive links with engineering and design companies offering placements both in the UK and further afield. You can start your placement any time between June and the end of August.

We will do our best to help you find a placement and support and guide you through the process. Our Engineering and Design partnerships team organises and delivers employability workshops to guide you through the whole placement process from CV writing and interview techniques to prepare you for applying. We cannot guarantee you a placement position so if you are unable to secure a placement, you'll transfer on to our 12-month alternative course and will have the opportunity to graduate with an MSc in Low-Carbon Building Design.

Watch our video about our students' experiences on placement.
