Zero Carbon Futures MSc

2 years part time, starting in October 2023

Lead organisations and society towards a zero-carbon world by developing the knowledge and skills to deliver initiatives with real impact.

In the face of a climate emergency, we live in a world where zero carbon is the only way forward. In the middle of this are businesses, organisations and industries all tackling this complex transition. More than ever, they need a climate-literate workforce prepared to lead the way and drive organisational change. At Bath, our Zero Carbon Futures course is designed to do just that. It gives you the technical knowledge and transformative thinking required to create science-based, evidence-led climate initiatives, together with the leadership skills to turn these initiatives into reality.

We believe that you can deliver impact as part of your studies so instead of a doing a dissertation, you'll complete your degree with a consultancy project. You'll work with partners such as businesses, charities, government and the local community on low-carbon projects linked to real challenges.

A flexible and collaborative learning experience

Our course includes flexible, hybrid learning options so that students who cannot always be on campus can engage fully and build valuable remote-working skills. It also allows us to reduce the carbon impact of the course.

We take a team-based approach to teaching. Throughout the course you’ll work in diverse groups with students from a range of backgrounds so that each cohort has a unique educational experience.

Your future starts here

We embed professional skills and employability development into the course to help prepare you for your career. Our Faculty’s postgraduate employability team runs professional skills workshops, and one-to-one sessions to help you with your CV and interview preparation.

We expect graduates from our course to design and deliver zero-carbon projects in a range of organisations, including businesses, charities, NGOs and government.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

Use creativity and rigorous evaluation to identify innovative solutions with real impact. In this unit, you’ll apply a principled design approach to zero-carbon challenges. Radical thinking for transformative change

10 credits

Explore the complexities of zero-carbon as a ‘wicked problem’ using a holistic, systems-thinking approach. This includes societal, political and ethical perspectives. You’ll use this approach to gain insights on ways to achieve radical change at speed and scale. You’ll also identify some of the inevitable barriers, trade-offs and challenges associated with a zero-carbon transition.

Science-based decision making

10 credits

You will develop a principled approach for making sound evidence-based decisions. You’ll use a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, enabling you to objectively appraise the impacts (both positive and negative) of carbon reduction interventions.

Zero-carbon consultancy project

30 credits

Work in teams on a real-life, zero-carbon related project with tangible impact. You’ll typically work with a partner organisation to, for example, find a viable solution to a zero-carbon challenge, or execute a proposed zero-carbon intervention.
