Architectural Engineering: Environmental Design MSc

1 year, starting in September 2025

Develop the skills to become an environmental design specialist and create buildings that combine sustainability with comfortable living.

Our course brings together architectural design and engineering so you can create spaces that are practical and sustainable as well as beautiful. You'll learn how to design buildings with low-carbon footprints and a focus on comfortable and healthy living.

Reducing the environmental impact of construction is one of the most important challenges industry faces. We want to help you advance your design and technical skills to work as a trained professional creating a more sustainable future for our infrastructure. You’ll apply engineering principles and your understanding of how people use buildings to come up with building design solutions. The new concepts and technologies you’ll explore will help you graduate with the confidence and knowledge to develop sustainable building strategies.

You'll also have the opportunity to take a five-day intensive course in Passivhaus design. This trains you to become a qualified Passivhaus designer or consultant. There is an extra cost for taking this course.

Learn from experts in the field

Based in our Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, you'll learn from academics with expertise in the effects of climate change on the built infrastructure and the need for sustainable development. Their international collaborations and research activity feed into our teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Use specialist facilities

We have a range of facilities to support your studies including environmental monitoring facilities and access to specialist computer and software facilities for environmental modelling. Our laboratories contain equipment that exceed industry standards.

Professional accreditations

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). To hold accredited qualifications for CEng registration, candidates must also hold a Bachelor (Hons) degree that has been accredited as partially meeting the acdemic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineering (CEng).

Recognition of professional qualifications


As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

Origin of qualifications

British qualifications

You should have a first or strong second-class Bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent.

To apply for this programme you should have an undergraduate degree in an appropriate subject such as architectural engineering, architecture with strong technical content, civil engineering or building services engineering, or another subject which included a significant modelling component (e.g. physics or engineering).

You must demonstrate basic quantitative skills, acquired through modules such as building physics, mathematics or statistics.

If your first language is not English but within the last 2 years you completed your degree in the UK you may be exempt from our English language requirements.

Extra costs

If you receive an offer, you will need to pay a non-refundable deposit of £1,000 when you accept to secure your place. This will be deducted from your tuition fee when you register.

You'll need to budget for a good laptop to carry out computational work. You can do this through our IT Purchasing service who will advise you on the best equipment for your needs. There is also support available to help you access the technology you need.

You'll also need to pay around £50 for a student software licence.

Budgeting

You will need to budget at least £100 for the cost of photocopying, printing and binding. You will also need to budget for the cost of textbooks.

Assessment and modelling tools

10 credits

Develop and practise using the modelling tools needed to make energy and environmental assessments on various aspects of building design, focusing on individual elements and buildings as a whole.

This unit spans the following periods of study:

Building integrated environmental systems

10 credits

Learn how to integrate technical design approaches to maximise the environmental performance of buildings in a holistic manner. This includes aspects of passive and active design such as shading, ventilation, acoustics, lighting and renewables.

Dissertation

30 credits

Conduct fundamental or applied research into a topic relevant to your course. This will be supervised by one of our academic experts in the field and supported by other staff as appropriate. You’ll critically evaluate the research approach and effectively communicate the outcomes of your research. Your dissertation should show originality, insight, and critical analysis.

Environmental performance of materials and buildings

10 credits

Develop a deep understanding of how the different elements of a building work separately and in combination. You’ll explore energy flow, occupants' environmental impact and low-carbon building performance, and construction material choices.

Multidisciplinary project

10 credits

Work effectively with students on different construction-related MSc courses to develop the design of a building. You’ll communicate your design to a professional client, considering site and project needs, planning, and architectural design solutions. You’ll develop an element of the building design in detail and investigate aspects related to your course in depth. You’ll also consider sustainable and resilient design, operation, and management while working to regulations and standards.

Principles of construction project management

10 credits

Explore the complexities and uncertainties of managing multidisciplinary projects in the construction industry. You’ll cover all stages of a project, from start (strategy, planning, cost and risk) to end-of-life (reuse and recycle). You’ll develop management and technology skills to apply to a range of design and construction applications. You’ll also learn how to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders on projects where there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution.

Professional and research skills for the construction industry

10 credits

Learn a range of professional skills and research techniques valued in the construction sector including communication, planning, and critical and professional evaluation. You’ll propose and plan a solution to a research question you identify. Then you’ll conduct theoretical or practical research to evidence your ability to problem solve and critically analyse results. Finally, you’ll reflect on your thinking and learning processes to develop knowledge and awareness beneficial to teamwork.
