International Management and Modern Languages (German) BSc (Hons)

4 years including year abroad, starting in September 2019

Learn to function effectively in an international business environment. Fulfil the current demand for business leaders with management and language skills.

This distinctive degree combines business and management with German language skills. It is delivered by the School of Management and the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies. You'll benefit from the expertise of two leading departments.

The first two years cover core management subjects while developing your German. We deliver several units in German and you'll learn about the country's business environment. This prepares you for your year abroad.

In Year 3 you will spend up to 12 months in a German-speaking country. You'll have the flexibility to choose a work placement, International Academic Exchange or a combination of both.

In your final year you'll choose from a range of management units and continue to build your expertise in German.

Professional Development Programme

Prepare for the career you want with our Professional Development Programme (PDP). PDP includes training and workshops to improve your skills in areas like:

  • writing CVs and applications
  • job interviews
  • aptitude tests

If you want to do a placement, PDP will help you find a relevant role and make the most of your time there.

Teaching

You’ll learn from academics with expertise in business and management. Their international collaborations and research activities feed into undergraduate teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Course structure

This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2019 and ends in 2023. Induction week starts on 23 January 2019.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You'll be able to choose from a number of optional units in years 2 and 4. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Year abroad

In Year 3 you will spend up to 12 months in a German-speaking country. You'll have the flexibility to choose a work placement, International Academic Exchange or a combination of both. You will immerse yourself in social, political and cultural life during your year abroad, preparing you for a career in an international environment.

Read more about the year abroad.

Work placements are real jobs and are usually paid. You'll gain an advantage in the job market with this valuable experience. Read more about the School of Management placement scheme.

Placement opportunities may not be guaranteed, but our dedicated Placements Team will liaise with employers, arrange interviews and help you apply.

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should demonstrate your enthusiasm for international management and languages. You might demonstrate that you have an active interest in understanding people, work and organisations in a global setting, as well as developing your chosen language.

You will need a strong performance in German as part of your entry qualifications. If you are not taking it as part of your entry qualification, we can accept a relevant B2 level language qualification, such as TestDaF, Goethe-Zertifikat Deutsch or DSD.

We welcome students from a variety of backgrounds to our language courses. Language content in the first year of this degree is typically pitched at students who have studied that language to A level (or equivalent) and who are not native speakers. If you have more advanced language skills you may find these aspects of first year study less challenging.
