Chemistry for Drug Discovery MChem (Hons)

4 years including study year abroad, starting in September 2019

Combine your passion for chemistry with a desire to make a real contribution to the world of pharmaceuticals.

You’ll gain a solid foundation in chemistry which you will use to understand how drugs and medicines are designed and made, how they work and why they are successful. Major pharmaceutical companies have contributed to the design of the course so you can be sure that you will gain experience in areas that are of interest to industry. Our chemistry degrees have the same core units in the first year giving you the flexibility to switch courses.

You’ll gain an in-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry as well as the skills to carry out experimental and computational drug discovery projects. The broad range of topics covered will give you the option of a career in the pharmaceutical industry as well as a wide range of careers in research, academia and industry.

The Master of Chemistry (MChem) provides you with the same core skills and knowledge of the bachelor’s but with a greater exposure to research and advanced practical techniques, including a major research project throughout the final year.

Teaching

You’ll learn from academics with expertise in all branches of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, physical and computational chemistry. Their international collaborations and research activities feed into undergraduate teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

You’ll be supported during your studies by weekly small group tutorials with an Academic Tutor and regular one-to-one meetings with a Personal Tutor.

Facilities

You’ll learn core experimental skills in our well-equipped undergraduate teaching laboratories. You can also access our Chemical Characterisation and Analysis Facility, and our Microscopy and Analysis Suite to familiarise yourself with spectroscopy and other techniques.

You'll receive a free lab coat and safety glasses to use throughout your course when you start.

Careers

A wealth of career opportunities are open to you as a chemistry graduate. You’ll develop the skills and knowledge to work in technical areas or scientific research and development in materials, pharmaceuticals, energy and the environment.

You’ll also be well suited to broader roles in education, scientific publishing, administration, banking and finance. Many of our graduates choose to go on to postgraduate study in preparation for academic or industry-based research careers. Find out more about what our graduates go on to do.

Course structure

This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2019 and ends in 2024. Induction week starts on 23 September 2019.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You can choose from a number of optional units in year 4. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.
