Accounting and Finance BSc (Hons)

4 years including placement year, starting in September 2020

Gain a solid grounding in core management areas. You’ll develop the knowledge and skills needed for a career in accounting, finance or business.

Year 1 covers the fundamentals of economics, finance and accounting. These core principles will provide context for the rest of your course.

From Year 2 onwards you’ll specialise in accounting and finance, with a range of compulsory and optional units. Compulsory units will equip you with the contemporary knowledge and skills you’ll need for a financial career. Final year units focus on advanced level accounting and finance.

After your first year, you’ll be able to choose from a wide range of optional units. These let you explore other areas of interest like entrepreneurship, investment banking or leadership.

In your final year, you can apply for our International Academic Exchange programme. You'll gain international exposure by spending a semester studying abroad at one of our partner business schools.

Professional Development Programme

Prepare for the career you want with our Professional Development Programme (PDP). PDP includes training and workshops to improve your skills in areas like:

  • writing CVs and applications
  • job interviews
  • aptitude tests

If your course includes a placement, PDP will help you find a relevant role and make the most of your time there.

For our three year (non-placement) course, PDP is only available in Year 1.

Teaching

You’ll learn from academics with expertise in accounting and finance. Their international collaborations and research activities feed into undergraduate teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Course structure

This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2020 and ends in 2024. Induction week starts on 21 September 2020.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You'll be able to choose from a number of optional units in years 2 and 4. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Fees and funding

Fees and funding information for Accounting and Finance BSc (Hons) including placement year

Fees

Your tuition fees and how you pay them will depend on whether you are a Home, EU, Island or Overseas student.

Learn how we decide fee status

These fees are for the academic year 2020/21 only. Tuition fees are liable to increase annually for all University of Bath students.

Home, Island and EU students

Tuition fee for the academic year 2020/21

£9,250

Placement fee

You will normally pay a reduced tuition fee instead of the full year fee while on your work placement.

These are currently capped by the Government at either 20% of the full-time fee for work placement or 15% for study abroad, or if the placements are part of the Erasmus+ scheme.

Legal information

UK undergraduate fees are regulated by the government. These fees are subject to parliamentary approval.

If you are an EU undergraduate student starting your studies in or before 2020/21, your fees will be the same as the UK undergraduate fee for the length of your course.

Where a course offers a shorter optional, additional placement or study abroad period, usually in Year 4, this is not classed as a placement year for fees purposes and is subject to full fees.

Overseas students

Tuition fee for the academic year 2020/21

£20,000

Placement fee

You will normally pay a reduced tuition fee instead of the full year fee while on your work placement.

Legal information

You should budget for an increase of up to 5% each year for every further year of study; we will not increase your fees each year by more than this percentage and the amount will be set out on our fee page in December for the following academic year.

If you aren't paying your fees in British pounds, you should also budget for possible fluctuations in your own currency.

Where a course offers a shorter optional, additional placement or study abroad period, usually in Year 4, this is not classed as a placement year for fees purposes and is subject to full fees.

How to pay

Tuition fee loans

If you are studying an undergraduate course, you may be able to take out a loan for your tuition fees and living costs.

Scholarships and bursaries

You could be considered for a bursary or scholarship to help you study at Bath. This is in addition to your student loan and you do not have to pay it back.

Other payment options

You can pay your tuition fees by Direct Debit, debit card, credit card, cheque, bank transfer or cash. You may also be eligible for a student loan to help you pay your fees.

Budgeting

You will need to budget at least £100 for the cost of photocopying, printing and binding. You will also need to budget for the cost of textbooks.

Some courses involve visits away from campus and you may be required to pay some or all of the costs of travel, accommodation and food and drink.

If you’re on a placement, you’re responsible for your own travel, accommodation and living costs. You should also consider the financial implications if you go on an unpaid or overseas placement.

Selection process

We will usually assess you based on your UCAS application. If you are studying certain qualifications, such as an Access to HE Diploma, you may be invited to attend an interview as part of our selection process so we can better assess your studies and experiences. If you are studying an Access to HE Diploma, please make sure that your UCAS application is submitted by 15 January: if you apply after this deadline, then it may be too late for us to include you in our interview process.

Very exceptionally we may invite you to an interview if you have circumstances we cannot assess from an application alone.

Our interview page gives more information on what you should expect from an interview.
