Business BSc (Hons)

4 years including two six-month placements, starting in September 2021

Learn the practical, analytical and critical skills you need to become a business leader. Get real professional experience with two placements.

This flexible business and management degree is different. You will complete two six-month placements with separate companies rather than 12 months with one. Experience of two roles will help you decide on your future career direction and expand your professional network.

You’ll also work with businesses through applied research including the Final Year Project.

Whatever your career goals, you’ll be able to customise your degree with optional units.

Year 1

Study the fundamental subjects relevant to business and management including business and society, economics, data analysis and accounting. These core units will help you decide your path through the rest of your degree. From Year 2, you choose which options to study.

Year 2

Experience the working world earlier than on most degrees with a six-month placement in your first semester.

In the second semester, you’ll be able to pick from a range of optional units in areas like marketing and human resources, and will do a research project on a topic of your own choice.

Year 3

Continue to customise your course with more optional units in areas like decision making, finance and consumer psychology. Work with a charity or NGO on an entrepreneurship action project.

Get more practical work experience with your second six-month placement. Recent employers include Ferrero, Kraft Heinz and Vita Coco.

Year 4

Choose the units to explore areas of interest such as entrepreneurship and innovation, business and marketing in a digital world, behavioural finance, leading and managing change, and investment banking. For your Final Year Project, you’ll work in groups to tackle a real business issue for one of our partner organisations.

In your final year you can apply for our International Academic Exchange programme. You'll gain international exposure by spending a semester studying abroad at one of our partner business schools.

Professional Development Programme

Prepare for the career you want with our Professional Development Programme (PDP). PDP includes training and workshops to improve your skills in areas like:

  • writing CVs and applications
  • job interviews
  • aptitude tests

PDP will also help you find relevant work placements and make the most of your time there.

Study in an enriched learning environment

Alongside teaching, our academics carry out research in all aspects of business and management. This ensures that you’ll learn about the latest developments in these areas. You’ll be taught by experts in a range of subjects like marketing, finance, strategy, accounting, economics and operations management.

Building for the future

The University is investing in a new School of Management building.

The latest technology will give you a flexible and modern learning environment. The design focuses on working together, with an open layout to enable effective teamwork.

Our new building will encourage engagement with other students and academics. A dedicated Employment Hub will provide a space for you to meet and network with our industry partners.

Prepare for your future

We have an excellent graduate employment record. A high number of our graduates are employed or studying six months after finishing their course (Unistats, 2019):

  • 84% of Business Administration (now BSc Business) graduates
  • 85% of Management (four year) graduates
  • 85% of Management with Marketing graduates
  • 83% of International Management graduates
  • 85% (German), 80% (French) and 65% (Spanish) of International Management with Modern Languages graduates

2021/22 Academic Year

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, information about courses starting in September 2021 may be subject to change. We continue to improve your teaching and learning experience so you gain skills and understanding which are valuable to you and sought after by employers.

Before you apply for a course, please check the website for the most recently published course detail. If you apply to the University of Bath, you will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

During the 2020/21 Academic Year, our courses are being delivered through a blended learning approach. The Bath Blend has been designed to be flexible in the face of possible changes in law or official government guidance, including measures on social distancing which may occur through the course of the next academic year and other changes to the operating environment for Universities which may be caused by the pandemic.

Information for students on our plans for the 2020-21 academic year.

Course structure

This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2021 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 27 September 2021.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You'll be able to choose from over 50 optional units in Years 2, 3 and 4. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Placement

Placements are real jobs and usually paid. The highest UK salary in 2019 was £50,000. The average salaries were £18,878 (Year 2) and £22,539 (Year 3). Salaries shown are pro-rata annual rate.

Average salaries are based on data provided by the 125 Year 2 and 132 Year 3 students that went on placement in 2019. Recent employers include BMW, Ferrero and BNY Mellon.

Placement opportunities may not be guaranteed, but our dedicated Placements Team will liaise with employers, arrange interviews and help you apply. Read more about the School of Management placement scheme.

Learning and assessment

You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.

Assessment breakdown

The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional modules you choose.

A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 67% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.

The final degree classification is determined by your second, third and final year marks and each contributes 16%, 16% and 68% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between ten and 20 hours a week in your first year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 25 - 30 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.

Entry requirements

We consider a range of factors when assessing your application for this course, including your previous academic performance (such as GCSEs), your personal statement, your predicted grades and the combination of subjects you study at A level (or equivalent).

Your personal statement needs to create a strong impression as part of your university application. It's your opportunity to say why you want to study your chosen course, and what skills, experiences and achievements you have that will make you a successful student. A competitive statement will reflect on books or articles you may have read or any work experience you may have undertaken. When describing relevant experiences, you should demonstrate what you have learnt and how they are relevant to business or your future career.

Your entry qualifications should demonstrate a breadth of study through subjects that show both essay-writing and numerical skills. Examples of numerical subjects could include Mathematics, any science, Economics or Psychology Statistics or Geology. Examples of essay-based subjects could include Business Studies, Economics, English Literature, Politics, Psychology, Sociology or Religious Studies.

If you study qualifications such as A levels, you will ideally have one subject in each of the above categories and a third complementary subject relevant to this course. Some subjects, such as Economics or Psychology, could be counted for any one of these categories. Examples of relevant complimentary subjects for BSc Business could include Accounting, Geography, Law, Media Studies, Philosophy or Sociology.

We know that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. We consider any application based on its merits, including your background and circumstances, including through:

We are unable to consider applications for direct entry to year 2 or above.

This vocational study can be any qualification we accept, such as a BTEC National Diploma (RQF) or two BTEC National Extended Certificates (RQF). We can consider vocational study in Business, but we may be able to consider other subject areas if they have a similar balance of numerical and essay-based study. If you are studying a BTEC National Extended Diploma (RQF) we may be able to consider you on the basis of that alone - please see our Pearson Edexcel BTEC requirements below.

Our typical offer will including individual grades in the relevant components - please contact admissions@bath.ac.uk for further advice before you apply.

Scottish Highers Typical offer

AA in Advanced Highers

We make offers based on Advanced Highers. You will typically be expected to have completed five Scottish Highers and your grades in these will be considered as part of your application. We prefer applicants who have achieved at least AAAAB in their Highers.

Access to HE Diploma Typical offer

36 credits at Distinction

A pass in the Access to HE Diploma with at least 36 credits achieved at Distinction and 3 credits achieved at Merit or above.

We are able to consider the Access to HE Diploma for entry. Your Access course units should demonstrate a broad skill-set that includes both numerical skills, such as those developed in Mathematics or science-based units, and discursive reasoning skills, such as those developed in essay based subjects such as English or humanities.

Studying Business units as part of your Access course is beneficial but not essential. However, as we are keen for you to have developed a broad range of skills, no more than 30 credits should be from units within the Business Studies subject area.

Open University credits Typical offer

Pass units worth 120 credits including a minimum of a Pass 2 with 75% in a relevant Level 2 unit.

Typically, we would be looking for you to have studied units worth at least 120 credits, including at least 30 credits at Level 2. We will consider your application carefully and take note of any previous qualifications or relevant work experience. We may be able to consider alternative units to those listed. Please contact us to discuss your profile.

Taking OU credits may be counted as degree-level study by the Student Loans Company and therefore may be counted as previous study and have an impact on your ability to access student loans for the entirety of your chosen degree. We recommend that you discuss this in detail with the SLC before following this progression route to the University of Bath.

Combinations of qualifications Typical offer

Your application will be considered individually based on the particular combination of qualifications and subjects that you are taking.

We can consider combinations of accepted qualifications, of which some common examples are:

  • AA in two A levels plus D in the BTEC National Extended Certificate (RQF) or Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate (RQF)
  • A in one A level subject plus DD in the BTEC National Diploma (RQF)
  • AA in two A levels plus D3 in a Pre-U principal subject
  • AA in two A levels (excluding Accounting), plus A in the LIBF Level 3 Diploma in Financial Studies (DipFS). While we can consider this qualification as an equivalent to a third A level, please see the information above for guidance about preferred subjects.

We can also consider combinations that are not listed and that do not include A levels. You should read the information about essential and preferred subjects and subject combinations. We cannot consider different qualifications in the same subject area.

  • GCSE English Language or Literature grade 6 or B (or equivalent from English language category A)

Your GCSE grades will be carefully considered as part of our contextual admissions process and depending on your circumstances, we may be able to consider you with 4 or C in Mathematics or English Language or Literature GCSE.
