Chemistry for Drug Discovery MChem (Hons)

4 years including placement year, starting in September 2021

Combine your passion for chemistry with a desire to make a real contribution to the development of new pharmaceuticals.

If you’re interested in the drug discovery process and want to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry, this is the course for you.

You’ll gain a solid foundation in chemistry with a focus on how drugs and medicines are designed and made, how they work and why they’re successful. Major pharmaceutical companies have contributed to the design of the course so you can be sure that you will gain experience in areas that are of interest to industry.

You’ll develop in-depth knowledge of the drug design process, and the skills to carry out experimental and computational drug discovery projects. You’ll also be able to specialise in areas that interest you most with optional units and a research project. There will also be opportunities for you to put your chemistry knowledge into practice in research laboratories and other professional environments outside the University.

Our chemistry degrees have the same core units in the first year giving you the flexibility to switch courses.

The Master of Chemistry (MChem) provides you with the same core skills and knowledge of the bachelor’s but with a greater exposure to research and advanced practical techniques, including a major research project throughout the final year.

Put your learning into practice

Alongside teaching, our academics carry out research in all branches of chemistry and you’ll have the chance to work alongside them on your own project. You can also apply what you’ve learnt during your degree at public engagement events and in schools.

Use specialist facilities

You’ll learn core experimental skills in our well-equipped labs. You can also access our characterisation facilities to familiarise yourself with spectroscopy (NMR, IR, UV) and other techniques such as mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, microscopy and chromatography.

You'll receive a free lab coat and safety glasses to use throughout your course when you start.

Take a look at an undergraduate lab session in our 360 video.

Prepare for your future

A wealth of career opportunities are open to you as a chemistry graduate. You could go on to work in technical areas, or scientific research and development in materials, pharmaceuticals, energy and the environment. You’ll also be well suited to broader roles in education, scientific publishing, patents, administration and finance, or further study such as a PhD or PGCE.

Course structure

This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2021 and ends in 2025. Induction week starts on 27 September 2021.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You can choose from a number of optional units in year 4. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Placement

Going on placement gives you the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge to a year working in industry. You’ll be employed full-time in a role to match your future career ambitions, broadening your experience and transferable skills. This could give you a competitive edge when applying for graduate jobs.

We have links with some of the industry’s leading companies. Recent employers include GlaxoSmithKline, Syngenta, AkzoNobel and Pfizer.

Placement opportunities can't be guaranteed but you will receive tailored support from our specialist team to help you secure a placement.

Assessment breakdown

The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional units you choose.

A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 42% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.

The final degree classification is determined by your second, third and final year marks and each contributes 16%, 34% and 50% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 18 and 23 hours per week in your first year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 15-20 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.

Professional accreditations

By studying a course with a professional accreditation, you could have the chance to get workplace experience, learn about new developments in the industry and apply for membership with the accrediting body. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more exams.

  • Statistics

We are aware that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. We take this into careful consideration through our contextual admissions process.

Origin of qualifications

British qualifications

A level Typical offer

AAB or AAA

We prefer students with a range of maths- and science-based subjects, and your typical offer depends on how many of these subjects you study in your A level subjects.

If you study Chemistry and at least two other maths or science subjects:

If you study Chemistry and only one other maths or science subject:

AAA in three A levels including Chemistry and one other science or mathematics subject.

If you study four or more subjects and could meet either set of requirements, our typical offer will normally be the lower of the two (AAB).

If you are taking a GCE A level in a science subject, you will need to pass any separate science practical endorsement.

A level Alternative offer

AAB or ABB

Most of our students will join us with three principal subjects, but you may have study beyond this (such as a Global Perspectives course or additional study in maths) which demonstrates your individual talents that will help you with your degree. We recognise these studies through our alternative offers. Like our typical offer, the grades required by an alternative offer depend on the number of science and mathematics subjects you are studying.

If you study Chemistry and at least two other maths or science subjects:

ABB in three A levels including A in Chemistry and two other science or mathematics subjects plus one of:

  • grade A in an EPQ
  • grade B in the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate
  • grade B in a Core Mathematics qualification
