Economics and Mathematics BSc (Hons)

4 years including study year abroad, starting in September 2021

Achieve a grounding in economic theory while learning different statistical approaches for the analysis of economic data.

This course is for those who want an understanding of the tools and key theories within economics and mathematics. You'll use these skills to analyse contemporary problems and policy. On this course, you’ll study the core elements of economics, including microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory and econometrics.

You will develop methodological and statistical tools for the analysis of complex data. Throughout your studies, you will be immersed in a wide variety of quantitative topics. This will enable you to develop and apply your advanced mathematical skills.

In your first year you'll study key concepts in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, and develop your skills in mathematical and statistical theory and applications.

In your second year you'll continue with more advanced study of economic theory, mathematics and statistics. You'll acquire a deep understanding of economic relationships.

In your final year, you'll study topics and techniques in advanced economic theory and mathematics to critique and contribute to current debates. You can tailor your choice of optional units to your personal interests

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to understand the complexities of global economic problems and data, and you will possess advanced quantitative skills and tools to create innovative solutions.

Study in an enriched learning environment

You will explore the diversity of economics, learning directly from academics whose passion, international collaborations and research activities feed directly into their teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Course structure

This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2021 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 27 September 2021.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You can choose from a number of optional units in year 4. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Year abroad

On this course you'll broaden your horizons and experience another culture whilst studying a course that complements your studies at Bath.

Study abroad locations include the National University of Singapore and Stellenbosch University (South Africa), as well as others. We seek to further expand on these. Study abroad opportunities are limited and are subject to availability at our partner institutions.

  • Written examination

Assessment breakdown

The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional units you choose.

A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree.

The final degree classification is determined by your second, third and final year marks and each contributes 32%, 0% and 68% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically around 15 hours a week in your first year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 35 hours per week in your first year, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.

‘The support offered at the University of Bath from both the Economics and Mathematics Departments is very beneficial to my learning, enabling me to reach my full potential.’

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should demonstrate your enthusiasm for your chosen degree. This might include relevant reading, involvement in political or debating societies, relevant topics from your current studies that particularly interest you, other extra-curricular or co-curricular activities, work experience or activism for a political party or an NGO.

You do not need to have studied Economics or Business before to be suitable for this course. Strong performance in Mathematics is essential, both in your entry qualifications and any previous study.

We also recommend you consider taking a STEP exam , as this can provide excellent preparation for studying university level Mathematics. If you are taking both Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A level any offer will include an alternative condition that includes a STEP grade (or the GCE Advanced Extension Award, MAT or TMUA). Depending on your qualifications an additional maths test may be entirely optional (for example, if you take the International Baccalaureate Diploma) or compulsory (for example, with APs). We publish guidance on how we use these different mathematics tests.

We are aware that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. We take this into careful consideration through our contextual admissions process.
