Electrical and Electronic Engineering BEng (Hons)

4 years including placement year, starting in September 2021

Learn the latest theoretical, hardware and software skills to pursue a professional career as an electrical and electronic engineer.

Our course gives you a broad and flexible education in electrical and electronic engineering. The range of engineering units lets you tailor your degree to your interests to support your future career choices.

From your first day, you’ll build on your understanding of electrical and electronic principles and gain an appreciation for new engineering techniques. Learning about the practical technologies used in industry will give you insight into current practices in professional engineering.

Group and individual projects give you the chance to develop your technical, teamwork, business and management skills throughout the course. Combining theory and practice, you'll take creative approaches to solve engineering problems relevant to industry. Your projects could be on topics such as virtual reality tracking systems, electrical motors and drives, medical sensors or next-generation LEDs.

Our partnerships with the UK Electronics Skills Foundation and the IET Power Academy give you access to scholarships with leading companies such as ARM, National Grid and Rolls Royce.

If you want a more in-depth study experience with advanced taught units and project work, you could consider applying for our MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering including placement year.

Teaching

You’ll learn from academics with expertise in electronic and electrical engineering. Their international collaborations and research activities feed into undergraduate teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Facilities

You'll have access to facilities specially equipped for your degree. Our laboratories are designed to be similar to industrial workspaces so you gain an insight into what it is like to work in a professional environment. These include laboratories for autonomous systems, robotics, tomography, bioelectronics, superconductivity and power electronics. We also have facilities for opto- and nano-electronics, additive manufacturing, printed circuit board prototyping and a mechanical workshop.

Watch our video to see the facilities you'll use as part of your degree.

Careers

We work with industrial partners to make sure our course content reflects the needs of engineering industries worldwide. You’ll graduate with the technical expertise and transferable skills that will open up employment opportunities for you. You can pursue a career in high-technology industries in electronics, power, aerospace, communications, robotics or manufacturing. Or you could find employment in other sectors such as IT, financial services, accountancy, the armed forces or business. Many of our graduates continue their studies to pursue an academic or research career.

2021/22 Academic Year

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, information about courses starting in September 2021 may be subject to change. We continue to improve your teaching and learning experience so you gain skills and understanding which are valuable to you and sought after by employers.

Before you apply for a course, please check the website for the most recently published course detail. If you apply to the University of Bath, you will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

During the 2020/21 Academic Year, our courses are being delivered through a blended learning approach. The Bath Blend has been designed to be flexible in the face of possible changes in law or official government guidance, including measures on social distancing which may occur through the course of the next academic year and other changes to the operating environment for Universities which may be caused by the pandemic.

Information for students on our plans for the 2020-21 academic year.

Course structure

This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2021 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 27 September 2021.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You'll be able to choose from a number of optional units in year 4. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Placement

Going on placement gives you a chance to apply theoretical knowledge to the workplace and develop skills in a professional environment. Your placement experience can benefit the rest of your degree and improve your career prospects after graduation. It can also be an opportunity to earn a salary during your degree.

Our students have worked at companies including Intel, Jaguar Land Rover, Thales, Renishaw, Nordic Semiconductor, Siemens, Ultra Electronics, Surrey Satellite Technology and McLaren.

You can decide whether you want to apply for a placement up until the end of your second year. Placement opportunities cannot be guaranteed but you will receive tailored support from our specialist team to help you secure a placement.

Find out more about engineering placements and the support we offer.

Learning and assessment

You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.

Learning

  • Laboratory sessions
  • Lectures
  • Practical sessions
  • Seminars
  • Tutorials
  • Workshops

Assessment

  • Coursework
  • Essay
  • Oral assessment
  • Practical work
  • Written examination

Assessment breakdown

The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional units you choose.

A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 40% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.

The final degree classification is determined by your second and final year marks and each contributes 32% and 68% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 17 and 27 hours a week in your first year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 13–23 hours per week in your first year, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.

Professional accreditations

By studying a course with a professional accreditation, you could have the chance to get workplace experience, learn about new developments in the industry and apply for membership with the accrediting body. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more exams.

‘I think my biggest achievement would be securing a job here. Having a graduate role is something big and I'm proud of it.’

Selection process

We will usually assess you based on your UCAS application. If you are studying certain qualifications, such as an Access to HE Diploma or a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, you may be invited to attend an interview as part of our selection process so we can better assess your studies and experiences.
