Mathematics and Physics MSci (Hons)

5 years including study year abroad, starting in September 2021

You can apply for this course from September 2020.

Master the logic, rigour and proof of mathematics alongside the universal principles of physics to prepare you for a wide range of careers.

This course is for you if you enjoy and excel at pure mathematics and want to combine that knowledge with insights into the physical world. You’ll get to understand the rigour and generality of mathematics and its particular role in formalising empirical physical laws.

In the first two years, you will study core topics in mathematics and physics. You can change the balance of the subjects through your choice of optional units in the following years. You’ll benefit from studying in two departments and may be able to transfer into either physics or mathematics if you decide to specialise.

The MSci degree gives you the opportunity to enhance and deepen your knowledge compared to BSc courses, particularly in topics at the forefront of research. You’ll study master's level units and carry out a master’s level research project, giving you ideal preparation for postgraduate study or a career in research.

Put your learning into practice

Our courses are inspired by our research. Our academics who teach you carry out research in many different areas of theoretical and experimental physics. They bring the latest developments in physics into their teaching, and you can get involved by working with them on your own research project.

Use specialist facilities

You’ll learn experimental and computing skills in our well-equipped teaching labs. You can carry out projects with research equipment and high-performance computers in our specialist research labs. We also have strong links to research facilities and observatories in the UK and around the world.

Prepare for your future

A physics degree will enable you to work within a wide range of careers such as scientific research and development, engineering, finance, IT, telecommunications or renewable energies. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in preparation for academic or industry-based research careers.

Course structure

This course lasts 5 years. It starts in September 2021 and ends in 2026. Welcome week starts on 27 September 2021.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You'll be able to choose from a number of optional units in years 4 and 5. Here are some examples of the units our students are currently studying.

Year abroad

Broaden your horizons by spending a year studying at a university abroad. You’ll experience another culture whilst studying a course that complements your studies at Bath.

We currently have links with universities in North America, Australasia, Asia and Europe, including Purdue University, the University of Queensland, National University Singapore and the University of Helsinki.

Read more about the year abroad opportunities.

Learning and assessment

You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.

Assessment breakdown

The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional units you choose.

A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 18% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.

The final degree classification is determined by your second, fourth and final year marks and each contributes 16%, 34% and 50% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 18 and 22 hours per week in your first year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 18-22 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.

Professional accreditations

By studying a course with a professional accreditation, you could have the chance to get workplace experience, learn about new developments in the industry and apply for membership with the accrediting body. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more exams.

‘Physics isn't just learning about how galaxies work or how particles are made up. It's about being able to look at the problem and say how it works and all fits together.’
Erin White BSc Physics including placement year (2020)

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should demonstrate your enthusiasm for studying mathematics and physics. This might include relevant reading, voluntary or work experience, areas of interest from your current studies or other relevant extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.

You will need a strong performance in both Mathematics and Physics as part of your entry qualifications. While not required, additional study in mathematics, such as A level Further Mathematics, a GCE Advanced Extension Award in Mathematics, MAT, TMUA or STEP, is good preparation for a degree with high level mathematics content.

We are aware that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. We take this into careful consideration through our contextual admissions process.

Origin of qualifications

British qualifications

A level Typical offer

A*AA

A*AA in three A levels including Mathematics and Physics with A* in Maths or Physics (or Further Mathematics if applicable).

If you are taking a GCE A level in a science subject, you will need to pass any separate science practical endorsement.

A level Alternative offer

AAA

Most of our students will join us with three A levels, but you may have study beyond this (such as a project qualification or additional study in maths) which demonstrates your individual talents that will help you with your degree. We recognise these studies through our alternative offers.

AAA in three A levels including Mathematics and Physics plus one of:

  • grade A in an EPQ
  • grade B in the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate
  • grade A in AS level Further Mathematics (except if you are studying an A level in that subject)
