A level Typical offer
AABAAB in three A levels including A in Biology and A in Chemistry
We will not require a pass in any separate science practical endorsement for a science A level if you apply for entry in 2022 (or deferred entry in 2023).
Vital in addressing global health and environmental challenges, biochemistry explores the chemical processes of living organisms at a molecular level.
Combine your interests in biology and chemistry by applying chemical knowledge and techniques to study biological processes. You’ll learn what’s happening inside cells, how they communicate with each other, and use this to predict how molecules will interact.
In year one you’ll gain a broad grounding in biosciences to help work out where your interests lie. Then from year two, you'll choose optional units in specific areas, such as developmental biology, genomics, neuroscience, cancer biology and microbiology.
And to keep your options open further, you'll even have the flexibility to switch between our biology and biochemistry courses after the first year.
The Master of Biochemistry (MBiochem) provides you with the same core skills and knowledge as the BSc but with a greater exposure to research and advanced practical techniques. You’ll study master's-level units and carry out a major research project, giving you ideal preparation for postgraduate study or a career in research.
In your final year, you’ll carry out your own research project, giving you first-hand experience as a researcher and the opportunity to contribute to the leading research of our academics.
We have world-leading research centres, covering evolution, regenerative medicine, networks and collective behaviour and mathematical biology.
You’ll spend time learning practical scientific techniques in our well-equipped teaching labs. You’ll also have access to a computer lab for bioinformatics and in the final year, the opportunity to work in our state-of-the-art research labs and with some of the broad range of biological materials used in our research.
Take a look around the Department on our 360 virtual tour.
We're ranked Top 10 for graduate prospects for biological sciences in the Complete University Guide 2021 and have excellent connections with industry.
You'll graduate with the knowledge and skills to be part of the next generation of scientists, helping make you highly sought after by employers. You'll also be well equipped to apply the skills you've gained in a range of other careers such as business, management or marketing or even go on to further study, such as a master’s or PhD.
Examples of recent employers include GSK, AstraZeneca, and UCB. Find out more about what our graduates go on to do.
You can find out more about studying a biosciences degree at Bath by visiting our Biosciences Virtual Experience page to hear from staff and students in the department.
Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, information about courses may be subject to change.
We continue to improve your teaching and learning experience so you gain skills and understanding which are valuable to you and sought after by employers.
Before you apply for a course, please check the website for the most recently published course detail. If you apply to the University of Bath, you will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.
During the 2020/21 Academic Year, our courses are being delivered through a blended learning approach. The Bath Blend has been designed to be flexible in the face of possible changes in law or official government guidance, including measures on social distancing and other changes to the operating environment for Universities which may be caused by the pandemic.
This course lasts 5 years. It starts in September 2022 and ends in 2027. Welcome week starts on 26 September 2022.
Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.
At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.
As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.
These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.
You'll be able to choose from a number of optional units in years 2, 4 and 5. Here are some examples of the optional units currently being studied by our students.
You may gain a competitive edge in the graduate job market by taking a placement year. You’ll work full-time in a role that might be undertaken by a graduate, where you’ll broaden your experience and transferable skills.
There are a wide range of opportunities, from working in marketing for a pharmaceutical company to a lab-based role at a research institute. We have links with some of industry's leading companies. Recent employers include Lilly, Field Studies Council, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Oxford Gene Technology, AstraZeneca, Genesys and LifeArc.
Placement opportunities can't be guaranteed but you will receive tailored support from our specialist team to help you secure a placement.
Find out more about going on placement. You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.
The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional units you choose.
A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 58% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.
The final degree classification is determined by your second, and final year marks and each contributes 32% and 68% respectively.
We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.
Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.
Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 11 and 15 hours per week in your first year.
In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 32-34 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.
As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).
The requirements to practice a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practice your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.
The United Kingdom currently subscribes to The Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications (MRPQ) Directive. The MRPQ Directive provides a reciprocal framework of rules which enables European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals to have their professional qualifications recognised in a state other than the one in which the qualification was obtained. In the event of a no deal Brexit, from 1 January 2021, the MRPQ Directive will no longer apply to the UK. However, it is anticipated that there will be a new system for recognising professional qualifications between the UK, EEA, and Switzerland.
‘You'll undertake an extended project lasting the whole academic year.’
Your application, especially your personal statement, should demonstrate your enthusiasm for studying biochemistry. This might include relevant reading, voluntary or work experience, areas of interest from your current studies or other relevant extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.
You will need a strong performance in both Biology and Chemistry as part of your entry qualifications.
We know that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. We consider any application based on its merits, including your background and circumstances, including through:
