International Management and Modern Languages (Spanish) BSc (Hons)

4 years including year abroad, starting in September 2022

Learn how to excel in an international business environment. Fulfil the demand for business leaders with both advanced language and management skills.

You will benefit from the expertise of two leading departments, the School of Management and the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies.

You’ll gain specialised knowledge of relevant countries’ business environments and contemporary politics, society and culture. From day one you’ll be taught in Spanish.

Year 1

You’ll cover core management subjects while developing your Spanish, including technical business vocabulary, business economics and data analysis. You will also study contemporary Spanish culture, politics and society.

Year 2

As well as optional units, you’ll cover core subjects like marketing and organisational behaviour whilst continuing to learn about Spain and Latin America’s business environment and recent history. This prepares you for your year abroad.

Year abroad

Spend up to 12 months in a Spanish-speaking country. You’ll have the flexibility to choose a work placement, International Academic Exchange or a combination of both.

Final year

In your final year you'll choose from a range of management units and continue to build your expertise in Spanish.

Professional Development Programme

Prepare for the career you want with our Professional Development Programme (PDP). PDP includes training and workshops to improve your skills in areas like:

  • writing CVs and applications
  • job interviews
  • aptitude tests

If you want to do a placement, PDP will help you find a relevant role and make the most of your time there.

Study in an enriched learning environment

Alongside teaching, our academics carry out research in all aspects of business and management. This ensures that you’ll learn about the latest developments in these areas. You’ll be taught by experts in a range of subjects like marketing, finance, strategy, accounting, economics and operations management.

2022/23 Academic Year

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, information about courses starting in the 22/23 academic year may be subject to change. We continue to improve your teaching and learning experience, so you gain skills and understanding which are valuable to you and sought after by employers.

Before you apply for a course, please check the website for the most recently published course detail. If you apply to the University of Bath, you will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

We understand that you will want to know more about the shape of the academic year. We work hard and plan for different scenarios, to be able to welcome you to the University of Bath at the start of each semester.

Find out about our approach for a safe campus experience for the current 2021 to 2022 academic year.

Course structure

This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2022 and ends in 2026. Welcome week starts on 26 September 2022.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You'll be able to choose from over 30 optional units in Years 2 and 4. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Year abroad

In Year 3 you will spend up to 12 months in a Spanish-speaking country. You'll have the flexibility to choose a work placement, International Academic Exchange or a combination of both. By spending a year abroad, you’ll have the opportunity to master Spanish.

Read more about the year abroad.

Work placements are real jobs and are usually paid. You'll gain an advantage in the job market with this valuable experience. Read more about the School of Management placement scheme. Recent employers include BMW, Wonderbox and Thales.

Placement opportunities may not be guaranteed, but our dedicated Placements Team will liaise with employers, arrange interviews and help you apply.

Learning and assessment

You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.

Learning

  • Lectures
  • Seminars

Assessment

  • Coursework
  • Practical work
  • Written examination

Assessment breakdown

The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional modules you choose.

A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 48% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.

The final degree classification is determined by your second, third and final year marks and each contributes 24%, 8% and 68% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 12 and 14 hours a week in your first year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 26 - 28 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practice a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practice your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

The United Kingdom currently subscribes to The Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications (MRPQ) Directive. The MRPQ Directive provides a reciprocal framework of rules which enables European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals to have their professional qualifications recognised in a state other than the one in which the qualification was obtained. In the event of a no deal Brexit, from 1 January 2021, the MRPQ Directive will no longer apply to the UK. However, it is anticipated that there will be a new system for recognising professional qualifications between the UK, EEA, and Switzerland.

‘It gives you the possibility to find out who you want to be, discover places, travel, meet incredible people.’
Florence Bares International Management and Modern Languages (Spanish) with placement at Adere.so (Graduating year, 2019)

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should demonstrate your enthusiasm for international management and languages. You might demonstrate that you have an active interest in understanding people, work and organisations in a global setting, as well as developing your chosen language.

You will need a strong performance in Spanish as part of your entry qualifications. If you are not taking it as part of your entry qualification, we can accept a relevant B2 level language qualification, such as DELE.

If you have more advanced language skills you may find these aspects of first year study less challenging.

We know that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. American qualifications

We accept no more than one Calculus AP as one of these three subjects.

We are aware that access to SAT/ACT exams has been limited over the past two years, and that many students have not taken these tests. Taking this into consideration, we will consider relevant performance in Maths and English via the Advanced Placement qualification to replace the SAT/ACT requirement. Should you not be studying an English AP, you will be required to take a further English test in order to meet our entry requirements. Please be aware that completion of the High School Diploma will remain a requirement. If you have any questions regarding this information, please email admissions@bath.ac.uk.

If you aren't paying your fees in British pounds, you should also budget for possible fluctuations in your own currency.

How to pay

Tuition fee loans

If you are studying an undergraduate course, you may be able to take out a loan for your tuition fees and living costs.

Read more about tuition fee loans

Scholarships and bursaries

You could be considered for a bursary or scholarship to help you study at Bath. This is in addition to your student loan and you do not have to pay it back.

Read more about bursaries and scholarships

Other payment options

You can pay your tuition fees by Direct Debit, debit card, credit card or bank transfer. You may also be eligible for a student loan to help you pay your fees.

Read more about your payment options

Budgeting

You will need to budget at least £100 for the cost of photocopying, printing and binding. You will also need to budget for the cost of textbooks.

Some courses involve visits away from campus and you may be required to pay some or all of the costs of travel, accommodation and food and drink.

Selection process

We will usually assess you based on your UCAS application. If you hold a language qualification that is not covered by our typical entry requirements we may invite you to attend an interview to assess your Spanish level. This interview will usually take place remotely. If you are studying certain qualifications, such as an Access to HE Diploma or a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, you may be invited to attend a group interview as part of our selection process so we can better assess your studies and experiences. If you are studying an Access to HE Diploma or Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, please make sure that your UCAS application is submitted by 26 January: if you apply after this deadline, then it may be too late for us to include you in our interview process.

Very exceptionally we may invite you to an interview if you have circumstances we cannot assess from an application alone.

Our interview page gives more information on what you should expect from an interview.
