Structural and Architectural Engineering MEng (Hons)

5 years including placement year, starting in September 2022

Integrate structural, architectural and environmental principles to advance the creative and sustainable design of our built environment.

Our course is for creative engineers who want to develop a holistic approach to designing buildings and structures. As a graduate, your imaginative approaches, ingenuity and communication skills will help you develop responsible solutions for the engineering challenges you will face.

In your first two years, you will learn the foundations of materials, geotechnics, structures and digital design. Once you have developed your fundamental engineering design skills, you will then explore aspects of sustainable building and structural design in later years.

Our courses draw on the strengths of a joint department with architecture, offering you a different experience from most universities. You’ll work with architecture students to prepare you for the professional relationships you'll experience in your career.

At Bath, you will have the opportunity to experience studio-based projects and gain insight from industrial guest lecturers, preparing you to tackle the range of structural engineering projects you will meet in your career.

Through final year projects and specialist modules you will integrate creative engineering design with research and innovation.

You can move between our Civil Engineering and Structural and Architectural Engineering courses, as well as decide whether you want to go on placement, up to the end of your second year.

Teaching

You’ll learn from leading academics with expertise in civil, structural and architectural engineering. Their collaborations in industry and research feed into undergraduate teaching and contribute to your learning experience. Also, visiting practice-based tutors bring their wealth of design experience to support projects and enrich teaching.

Facilities

You’ll develop your abilities in purpose-built design studios that foster an atmosphere of creativity and collaboration. You’ll also have access to a range of laboratories to support you throughout your civil engineering studies. These include structures, hydraulics, soils and materials research laboratories. We also house specific teaching and computer laboratories, and a 3D fabrication workshop. We’ll teach you to use specialist model-making equipment such as wood and metal working machinery, 3D printers, CNC routers and laser cutters. This will enable you to realise and test your engineering solutions.

Careers

As a Bath graduate, you’ll possess a high level of creative ability and excellent communication and people skills. You could go on to work as an engineering or structural designer, a site engineer or a project manager in the construction industry, where your knowledge, creativity, problem-solving and people skills are highly valued. Some of our graduates continue their studies with us or at other universities, pursuing careers in academia or research.

2022/23 Academic Year

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, information about courses may be subject to change.

We continue to improve your teaching and learning experience so you gain skills and understanding which are valuable to you and sought after by employers.

Before you apply for a course, please check the website for the most recently published course detail. If you apply to the University of Bath, you will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

During the 2020/21 Academic Year, our courses are being delivered through a blended learning approach. The Bath Blend has been designed to be flexible in the face of possible changes in law or official government guidance, including measures on social distancing and other changes to the operating environment for Universities which may be caused by the pandemic.

Course structure

This course lasts 5 years. It starts in September 2022 and ends in 2027. Welcome week starts on 26 September 2022.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Assessment breakdown

The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional units you choose.

A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 60% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.

The final degree classification is determined by your second, third and final year marks and each contributes 20%, 40% and 40% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 15 and 22 hours a week in your first year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 20–25 hours per week in your first year, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.

Professional accreditations

These accrediting bodies guarantee this course meets the standards set by the industry. By studying this course, you may get workplace experience and learn about new developments in the industry. If you graduate from this course, you may be eligible to apply for membership with the accrediting bodies. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more exams.

Our current civil engineering MEng courses are accredited by the following bodies. We are seeking reaccreditation for all Civil and Structural and Architectural Engineering courses in November 2021.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practice a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practice your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

The United Kingdom currently subscribes to The Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications (MRPQ) Directive. The MRPQ Directive provides a reciprocal framework of rules which enables European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals to have their professional qualifications recognised in a state other than the one in which the qualification was obtained. In the event of a no deal Brexit, from 1 January 2021, the MRPQ Directive will no longer apply to the UK. However, it is anticipated that there will be a new system for recognising professional qualifications between the UK, EEA, and Switzerland.

‘This year I've transitioned from a student to an engineer and become such an integral part of such a great team.’

Application information

Selection process

We will usually assess you based on your UCAS application. If you are studying certain qualifications, such as an Access to HE Diploma, you may be invited to attend an interview as part of our selection process so we can better assess your studies and experiences. If you are studying an Access to HE Diploma, please make sure that your UCAS application is submitted by 15 January: if you apply after this deadline, then it may be too late for us to include you in our interview process.

Very exceptionally we may invite you to an interview if you have circumstances we cannot assess from an application alone.

Our interview page gives more information on what you should expect from an interview.
