A level Typical offer
A*AAA*AA in three A levels including Mathematics.
We will not require a pass in any separate science practical endorsement for a science A level if you apply for entry in 2022 (or deferred entry in 2023).
Become an innovative computing professional with the skills needed for a career in the fast-growing field of AI.
This course is for you if you’re keen to learn about current Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, specialising in this field from the start of your degree whilst still gaining a broad grounding in computer science. AI is becoming an ever more important part of a wide range of sectors from medicine to marketing, so this course will help prepare you for continued demand in the job market.
You'll gain the skills and knowledge to apply the latest AI technologies and methods to a wide range of problems, studying topics such as machine learning, algorithms and complexity, and visual computing.
In the first year, you’ll learn the basics of computer science, including mathematics and programming skills, along with an introduction to the theory and practice of AI. In the second year, you’ll continue to develop your AI skills, with a focus on machine learning. In the final year, you’ll choose optional units alongside an individual project in a specific area of AI. You can specialise in areas such as robotics, natural language processing, intelligent agents or computer vision. You’ll regularly meet with an academic who’s an expert in your chosen field.
The MComp provides you with the same core skills and knowledge as the BSc but with a greater exposure to our research groups. You’ll study master's-level units and carry out a major research project, giving you ideal preparation for postgraduate study or a career in research.
As a student here, you’ll be part of a well-equipped and supportive department, with lots of opportunities to get involved in societies and events such as hackathons, coding competitions and conferences.
Alongside teaching, our academics carry out research in important areas of computer science including artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, mathematical foundations and visual computing. You’ll have the chance to work alongside them on your own research project.
You’ll have 24/7 access to purpose-built labs. This includes labs especially for computer science students and a dedicated prototyping lab, allowing you to create and experiment with software-driven systems and devices. Complex, data-intensive processes can be analysed over high-speed networks with our High-Performance Computing facility ‘Balena’.
Our courses offer excellent graduate prospects. Recent roles include Product Manager at Atos, Cyber Security Analyst at Selex ES, Software Tester at Fujitsu and Software Developer at Imagination Technologies. You could also work in business, education and administration, or go on to further study, such as a PhD.
Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, information about courses may be subject to change.
We continue to improve your teaching and learning experience so you gain skills and understanding which are valuable to you and sought after by employers.
Before you apply for a course, please check the website for the most recently published course detail. If you apply to the University of Bath, you will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.
During the 2020/21 Academic Year, our courses are being delivered through a blended learning approach. The Bath Blend has been designed to be flexible in the face of possible changes in law or official government guidance, including measures on social distancing and other changes to the operating environment for Universities which may be caused by the pandemic.
This course lasts 5 years. It starts in September 2022 and ends in 2027. Welcome week starts on 26 September 2022.
Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.
At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.
As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.
These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.
These are examples of optional units currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.
Broaden your horizons with a year studying at a university abroad. You’ll experience another culture while studying a course that complements your studies at Bath.
We have links with universities in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, currently including Binghamton University, University of Nebraska, University of Canterbury, TU Vienna and National University Singapore.
Read more about the year abroad opportunities. You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.
The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional modules you choose.
A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 41% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.
The final degree classification is determined by your second, fourth and final year marks and each contributes 16%, 34% and 50% respectively.
We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.
Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.
Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 15 and 20 hours per week in your first year.
In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 20-25 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.
As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).
The requirements to practice a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practice your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.
The United Kingdom currently subscribes to The Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications (MRPQ) Directive. The MRPQ Directive provides a reciprocal framework of rules which enables European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals to have their professional qualifications recognised in a state other than the one in which the qualification was obtained. In the event of a no deal Brexit, from 1 January 2021, the MRPQ Directive will no longer apply to the UK. However, it is anticipated that there will be a new system for recognising professional qualifications between the UK, EEA, and Switzerland.
‘Students have been asking us to offer more in AI and machine learning, and so now we are.’
We consider a range of factors when assessing your application for this course, including your previous academic performance (such as GCSEs), your personal statement, your predicted grades and the combination of subjects you study at A level (or equivalent).
Your personal statement should explain your motivation for choosing this degree and any relevant non-academic interests and achievements. You are more likely to be successful if you demonstrate a keen interest in areas relevant to computer science such as AI or programming through relevant reading, extracurricular or co-curricular activities, or work experience.
You will need a strong performance in Mathematics as part of your entry qualifications. We prefer applicants who can demonstrate evidence of logical and analytical thinking through the study of Computer Science, Further Mathematics, or both. While we prefer applicants who have previously studied Computer Science, you do not need to have done so to be suitable for this course.
We know that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. We consider any application based on its merits, including your background and circumstances, including through:
