We are launching the University of Bath School of Management’s annual series on influential feminist thinkers.
Our aim is to bring together people interested in exploring and discussing feminist thought and how major figures have influenced this in management and organisation studies.
This year’s focus is on the work of Judith Butler, which has been extraordinarily influential across many disciplines.
Our speakers Melissa Tyler, Kate Kenny and Kat Riach will explore how they use Butler’s ideas in their own research, and Elif Nur Duman Cogen and Justine Grønbæk Pors will analyse how other major feminist thinkers – notably Saba Mahmood and Karen Barad – have built on Butler’s work and taken it in new directions.
This year is also the 50th anniversary of the passing of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, so we will take advantage of this gathering to celebrate the anniversary.
We will explore, with Sarah Gilmore and Jackie Ford, ways in which women entered the professional workforce despite resistance from male occupants of organisational space. We will ask if there are any lessons to be learned in an era where patriarchy appears resurgent.
The day will conclude with a panel of the next generation of feminist thinkers, who will look forward to the centenary of the SDA 1975.
