In this Centre for Research in Education in Asia (CREA) presentation, Associate Professor Jing Lyu will examine recent developments with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) systems like ChatGPT and the potential that these systems have to serve as infrastructure-level tools for diverse applications, including language education.

It is not clear to what extent ChatGPT-generated English sentences can be considered Good Dictionary Examples (GDEX) if ChatGPT were to be directly used as a learner’s dictionary and how such examples can be effectively evaluated. This talk addresses these questions by evaluating ChatGPT-generated illustrative examples against 8-dimensional GDEX measures, which serve as objective indices for assessing their quality for pedagogical purposes.
